Man to appear in court over Waterford death

The 29-year-old will appear before the city’s District Court charged with assault causing harm to 49-year-old Thomas Jordan.

More serious charges are likely to follow.

An investigation into the death of Mr Jordan was launched after a man walked in to Waterford Garda Station and told gardaí a man in the William Street apartment block had died following a fight.

Detectives are still attempting to piece together the circumstances that led to the death of Mr Jordan.

He suffered multiple injuries to his head and body though it is believed no weapon was used in the attack.

It is not yet clear how the row broke out though it is believed both the victim and his alleged attacker had been drinking. Gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

Mr Jordan’s body was discovered early yesterday after the gardaí were alerted by the man’s alleged attacker.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the apartment block on Williams Street between 4pm on Wednesday and 5am yesterday morning to contact them.

The dead man was a separated father of two who had lived in the apartment block near the city’s People’s Park for a number of months.

A well-known local athlete, Mr Jordan is originally from St John’s Park in the city but lived for many years in Portlaw, Co Waterford.

A suspect questioned for 12 hours yesterday had also only recently moved in to the block and is originally from the Midlands.

It is thought an argument broke out in the hallway of the block, that it turned violent and spilled into one of the apartments.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a preliminary examination of the body yesterday.

A full post mortem was carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old youth was in a critical condition in hospital last night following a stabbing incident in Galway City. The assault took place in the Claddagh area of the city.

A man was arrested in the vicinity of the attack.
