AN internal garda inquiry is under way in Thurles into the stamping and signing of supplementary voting registers which were not presented by voters themselves but by local election candidates.

This breach in regulations was revealed in a six-month garda investigation into alleged vote rigging in Thurles following claims of widespread personation and that a number of "dead people" had voted.

The investigation resulted in a 50-page file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Earlier this week the DPP ruled there was "insufficient evidence" to prosecute anyone for alleged vote rigging.
