Four weekend fatalities brings roadside death toll this year to 367

FOUR people died in road accidents this weekend bringing the total killed on our roads this year to 367. Two people died on Co Cork roads. An 86-year-old woman was knocked down by a truck in Co Clare and a young man was killed when he crashed his car in Co Donegal.

Gardaí said the 29-year-old woman who died in an accident on the main Cork-Macroom road was Nuala Dennehy. Ms Dennehy from Clashduff, Midleton, died when her motorcycle collided with a car at Farnanes 4.45pm last Friday. The driver of the car received minor injuries. Gardaí said they were appealing to any witnesses to contact them at Macroom garda station.

The pensioner who lost her life on Friday afternoon in Ennis, Co Clare has been named as Ellen Murphy.

She was crossing Mill Road in the town centre when she was hit by a truck. Gardaí said they have interviewed a number of witnesses to the accident. Ms Murphy lived at Church Drive, Claycastle, Co Clare.

Meanwhile, a Co Wicklow man died after he lost control of the jeep he was driving and crashed into a tree. The accident happened at 4.15am on Saturday at Caherbirrane on the main Macroom-Milstreet road in Co Cork. The dead man was named as Denis Brerton, 37, from Blessington, Co Wicklow. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

An 18-year-old man, Maurice McNulty of Porthawl, Lifford, Co Donegal, died when he also lost control of the vehicle he was driving near Lifford in Co Donegal.

“The car went off the road and overturned. The young man was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene,” a garda spokesman said. The accident happened at 9.20am on Saturday.

Mr McNulty’s death brought to 10 the number of people killed so far this month.
