A CLAIM by the IFA that the National Sheep Identification System is “unworkable” was firmly rejected last night by the Department of Agriculture and Food.

IFA members returned their sheep registers to the department in Dublin yesterday in protest at what they described as a totally unreasonable and unworkable system.

But the department said it did not accept that contention, nor did it accept that Irish flock owners were incapable of completing the flock register, a legal requirement and an integral part of the traceability dimension of NSIS.
