MAIL in rural areas was delivered yesterday despite industrial action by the Irish Postmasters’ Union which closed sorting facilities at over 500 sub post offices.

An Post claimed its deal with the Communications Workers’ Union was a success. “The arrangements we put in place worked very effectively,” a company spokesman said.

“Out of 1,100 people involved in rural deliveries, all but 18 turned up to work and the deliveries were effected.”
