MICHAEL McDowell was accused yesterday of waging a phony war with Fianna Fáil over his repeated attacks on Sinn Féin.

Opposition parties were quick to seize on yesterday’s criticism of the Minister for Justice in the Irish Examiner by Fianna Fáil junior minister Jim McDaid. Mr McDaid said that Mr McDowell’s blitz on Republicans was damaging Fianna Fáil and was only intended to promote his Progressive Democrats at election time.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said that Fianna Fáil and the PDs are joined at the hip and the supposed row was merely intended to generate publicity for the Government parties.
