The 19-year-old victim was dragged into waste ground as she walked home, alone, from a Cork Institute of Technology student ball.

Gardaí believe the rapist was aged 19-20 and about 5ft 9 inches in height. He was wearing a light-coloured shirt and blue jeans.

Sergeant John Freeley appealed for anyone who saw a male acting suspiciously in the Dennehy’s Cross /Model Farm Road areas of the city after 2am. The attack took place after 3am.

The garda sergeant said the investigation team was anxious to contact a young couple who may have information about the attack, which occurred close to the junction of College Road and Magazine Road.

A couple in their 20s were seen walking together near the junction close to the time the attack took place.“We want to contact them so we can eliminate them from our inquiries,” he said.

The couple included a girl with blonde hair, wearing a grey tartan skirt and a Santa hat. Her companion was fair haired and wore a dark coat.

The couple, or anyone else with information, is asked to contact the gardaí at Togher, 021-4927120 or Bishopstown, 021-4541012.
