Public sector pay increases by 4.9%

AVERAGE weekly earnings of public sector workers rose from €666.71 to €699.61 in the year to the end of June, up 4.9% on the same period last year.

Teachers’ acceptance of a €37-an-hour supervision deal will make them the second-highest paid of public sector workers, outranked by gardaí, but ahead of prison officers and civil servants.

The new deal will give secondary school teachers an average weekly wage of €834, up from €797. Primary school teachers will earn an average of €750 a week.
