Officers arrested the armed robbers as they were making their getaway following the crimes, which took place within an hour of each other yesterday evening.

In the first incident, gardaí in Howth, north Dublin, were called to a robbery at the TSB in Sutton Cross just before 4pm.

An unarmed female garda confronted the two raiders, both wearing balaclavas, and called for back up. She managed to arrest one of the men.

“One man was arrested by gardaí and is being detained in Howth Garda Station and searches are on-going for the other raider believed to be involved in the incident,” said a garda spokesman.

It’s understood that €6,000 was taken.

A short time later, in what gardaí say was a separate incident, a raid was carried out on a post office in Dundrum, south Dublin.

Gardaí were alerted and are understood to have chased the raider through neighbouring areas before capturing him.

“One man is being detained in Rathmines Garda Station under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act,” said a garda spokesman.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, can be questioned for up to two days under this act.
