THE Government is to restrict the number of immigrants allowed to work in Ireland from next year because of the deteriorating state of the economy.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is also considering the US-style model of a green card for all immigrants seeking to live here.

The Minister said yesterday the country needed to be more selective in its work permit policy and ensure the skills of migrants match the needs of our economy.
