FINE Gael last night claimed that an amendment it has added to the Bill to reform State tribunals will save the State millions.

The party yesterday succeeded in securing Government acceptance for a proposal to introduce competitive tendering for lawyers acting for the State at Commissions of Investigations.

At a meeting of the Oireachtas Justice Committee yesterday, Justice Minister Michael McDowell accepted the principle of tendering. It will now be added as an amendment to the Commissions of Investigations Bill, which is currently before the Dáil.
