30 people assaulted daily in street violence

MORE than 30 people a day are assaulted in drink-related street violence, new Garda figures show.

A recent crackdown on late-night violence and drunkenness shows there were 57,000 public order offences in the last seven months - on average more than 240 a day.

"If you count 57,000 detections, the work-rate ratio would be a success, but it can be seen as a worrying trend," Garda spokesman Supt John Farrelly said yesterday.
