Third All Ireland schools’ quiz gets under way
First round heats of the Thomas Crosbie Holdings All Ireland Schools’ Quiz got under way in Cork and Carlow in the past two nights as the first of 165 teams met for the opening battles of the brains. The event had its genesis in a Munster-based event, which was staged from 1992 to 1997.
In 2002, TCH reinvented the quiz, making it a national 32-county event encompassing the country-wide stable of TCH regional titles, said quiz organiser Mr Barry Woods.
TCH was delighted at the growing level of interest in the quiz.
One-fifth of all secondary schools in the 32 counties were competing, he said.
The first round has begun and the quiz will be held in various venues throughout winter and spring, culminating in the final, which will be broadcast live on RTÉ radio in April/May.
The winning school will receive a perpetual trophy and a mobile computer laboratory, valued at €20,000 and donated by Apple Computers.
The first quiz of Round 1 of the Thomas Crosbie Holdings All Ireland schools quiz, held last night at the Imperial Hotel Cork, was won by Christians Brothers College Cork with a score 130.
The second quiz was won by St Aloysius School Cork with a score of 114.
