GOVERNMENT authorities in Ireland and Britain were last night working behind the scenes for the release of the Irish female aid worker kidnapped in Iraq.

Early yesterday unidentified terrorists abducted Margaret Hassan, the Irish-born chief in Iraq of the British-based charity CARE International.

Ms Hassan, who has lived in Iraq since the early 1970s and is a critic of the US-led invasion, was snatched as she made her way to work in Baghdad.
