HAPLESS motorists caught for speeding have been duped by an urban myth that says they can beat the penalty points system by confusing the computer.

But drivers taken in by the dream solution to the problem of mounting points have had a rude awakening from gardaí.

The myth, spread by word of mouth and a number of internet sites, is that motorists caught breaking the speed limit can avoid having points assigned to their licence by over-paying by cheque the fine that comes with the points.
