THE Irish public has donated an unprecedented €11 million to Sudan’s Darfur crisis in just two months - but more is needed to tackle the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

The crisis first flared 18 months ago when rebel groups in Darfur began fighting government troops.

In response government-armed Arab militia fighters, known as Janjaweed, have inflicted a reign of terror in the region, burning and looting villages. The Sudanese Government, which continues to deny arming the Janjaweed, faces UN-backed sanctions if it does not disarm the militia before the end of the month.
