Blasket future in doubt as €6m funding sought

FIFTY years after the evacuation of the Great Blasket island, State funding for a €8.5 million management plan for its future is still being sought.

A sum of €2.5 million has been made available for a new pier, but the remaining €6 million could be in doubt.

Kerry county manager Martin Nolan yesterday warned that if there was too much argument funding could be held up. The Department of the Environment is reviewing the situation at present.
