TEACHERS have defended the Leaving Certificate marking system which has drawn criticism from parents’ groups over mistakes by examiners.

More than 300 students who had not appealed results were upgraded when the Department of Education found errors in the work of five assistant examiners and checked the hundreds of papers each of them had corrected.

This year’s 2,300 upgrades from reviews and appeals accounted for fewer than 1% of the 380,000 grades to this year’s school leavers.
