No Tall Ships rip-off plea to city’s traders

THE ORGANISERS of the Tall Ships race have appealed to the business people of Waterford not to hike up their prices as the countdown to the event continues.

There are fears that some unscrupulous publicans or restaurant owners might increase their prices, as happened in neighbouring Kilkenny during the Cat Laughs Festival.

The practice, as well as the non-displaying of pub drink prices was slammed by the Director of Consumer Affairs.

Taxi drivers have already rubbished claims that they are to increase the minimum fare to €10 during the festival. Spokesman, Noel McLaurence, said such a move would be illegal and will not be allowed happen.

Now the chief organiser of the festival, Airport chairman, Nicky Fewer, has appealed to the public not to try to cash in on the sly during the four-day international event from July 6 to 9.

“We would hope that people would not try to rip people off. There will be enough business for everyone.

“We hope that people will be satisfied with charges applied throughout the event,” he said.

He said it creates a bad image for the city if someone tried to capitalise on the event by charging more. “It would be a pity if Waterford got that type of a reputation. It is something we can do without.”

Bars and restaurants on both sides of the Quays will be open for business throughout the festival and Mr Fewer hopes that restaurants will open earlier and provide food at various times of the day and night. “The atmosphere should be electric,” Mr Fewer said.

Meanwhile, the city council has already scrapped plans for a €5 per person fee for the park and ride system which will operate during the festival.

A host of free, on-street entertainment has been laid on, and 40 bands will perform in Waterford City between July 6 and 9.

No parking will be allowed within the cordon around the city during the festival and those with businesses or who are expecting deliveries during the festival are asked to ensure that they have the necessary permits to allow for passage during the event.
