Medical card extension talks

THE Department of Health has said that it is in talks with the Department of Finance on plans to extend the medical card scheme to an extra 200,000 people next year.

A spokesman said discussions were taking place between health and finance officials, but described reports that the scheme was to be scaled back as premature.

“These are still matters for discussion with the Department of Finance and we cannot say anything further at this stage,” the spokesperson said.
