Watchdog recalls food products as illegal dyes discovered
The substance at the centre of the latest safety scare is called Para Red and is similar to Sudan Red 1, a carcinogenic illegal agent recently discovered in products being sold here.
Thirteen products have been identified, many of which are marketed as low-fat products.
Yesterday, the FSAI warned manufacturers and retailers to be vigilant about the potential presence of Para Red in foodstuffs other than those identified.
Detailed scientific data is not available on Para Red, but food health and safety experts believe it is a Sudan Red 1-type additive which is likely to have a similar toxicology profile.
Sudan Red 1 has carcinogenic properties and was banned as a food colourant in Europe two years ago.
However, in March it was found in 300 food products in 20 countries, including Ireland.
FSAI chief executive Dr John O’Brien said the risks were minimal, but added: “The use of Para Red as a colourant in food is illegal and in the best interest of public health, any implicated food products should not be consumed.”
