Female firefighters call for new national guidelines on maternity

CALLS for a new national policy for women firefighters when they become pregnant were made at a conference yesterday.

There are only 27 full-time women firefighters, 23 of whom are in Dublin, and 33 part-timers. The lack of suitable maternity arrangements at work was described as an obstacle for other women wishing to join the service.

There are 2,000 firemen in the country.
