GARDAÍ who undergo specialist training in car crash investigation must go abroad, pay for the course themselves and recoup the money when they come back, a garda conference heard yesterday.

Gardaí call for crash probe training

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) adopted a motion calling on Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy to introduce a training programme for experienced gardaí to be trained as forensic road traffic investigators.

Jim Doddy of Garda Headquarters told the AGSI conference the current system of training for gardaí in Templemore College involved gardaí trying to reconstruct scenes on the Square. “This was okay when there was only small damage and no injuries cause in crashes. These days you have fatalities, a lot of serious injuries and major damage,” he said.
