PFIZER Healthcare Ireland screened 100 people during a free health check on the opening day of the National Ploughing Championships and referred 50 of them to their general practitioner for either raised blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Ryan Quigley of Pfizer Healthcare Ireland said heart disease and smoking are two leading causes of death, claiming in excess of 18,000 lives a year. Yet, many people don’t know their blood pressure or cholesterol level.

“Lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, taking exercise and quitting smoking are very valuable in helping protect against heart disease. But people need to become more proactive in making sure that cholesterol levels and blood pressure are in the healthy range,” he said.
