Gardaí launch probe after man is beaten with baseball bats

GARDAÍ are investigating a vicious assault on a non-national in Dublin early yesterday.

The victim was severely beaten by three men wielding baseball bats and sticks.

A spokesperson for Beaumont Hospital last night said the man was in a stable condition.

The 35-year-old suffered serious head and upper body injuries in the assault, which took place around 12.30am on Millbrook Road, Coolock, north Dublin.

The alarm was raised by a passerby who rang 999 and told gardaí an assault was taking place.

When officers from Coolock Station arrived the man was unconscious.

He was immediately taken by ambulance to nearby Beaumont Hospital, which is a specialist facility for head injuries.

Gardaí preserved the scene for forensic examination.

“This is a vicious assault causing harm, and he’s being treated for serious head injuries,” said a garda spokesman.

He said the three attackers were seen fleeing in the direction of Tonlagee Road but no description of them was available.

Gardaí yesterday conducted house-to-house inquiries in the area. No arrests have yet been made.

Last February, Lithuanian man Arunas Petravskas was stabbed to death at a poultry factory in Cootehill, Co Cavan, where he worked.

A Lithuanian colleague was later charged with the murder of the 34-year-old.
