After 30 years’ service ‘jobs market is fairly alien’

EAMONN NOLAN loved working at Comerama.

He served there for 30 years. Since its doors closed in mid-December last year, he’s picked up odd jobs here and there.

The 51-year-old got a few weeks sorting post in Portlaoise in the run-up to Christmas. But an accident put an end to that.

“The impact has been severe,” he said. “It’s hard when you’re used to getting up and going to work to face into signing on the dole. At my stage in life, the jobs market is fairly alien.” Most disappointing is the redundancy row affecting the workers. The Tánaiste “appointed an excellent business executive for the area to get jobs into Comerama, should something come up. But the commitment made on redundancy never materialised.
