Mount St Michael from Rosscarbery emerged as victors after a breakdown on the scores, having drawn with Beara Community School.
In a cuticle-chomping clash, both teams had 106 marks, but on the breakdown, Rosscarbery emerged victors with 23 non-conferred answers to Beara’s 21. The narrow winning margin had been the product of a highly entertaining evening with impressive performances from all those taking part.
In third place was Schull Community College, with 94 marks.
The Rosscarbery team comprised Eoghan Scally, Barry Murphy, Ciarán O’Donovan and Deirdre Murphy. It was a thrilling competition all the way through, and Rosscarbery came from behind in the last round to snatch victory.
Meanwhile, a first round supplementary heat of the national quiz, held at the Abbey CBS, Tipperary Town last evening, resulted in a win for the host school, who turned in a very strong performance against two schools from Clonmel.
Ardscoil na mBraithre finished in second place, having turned in a strong second-half performance, but really never threatened to catch the winners. Presentation Secondary School, Clonmel was third.
