He will hold the office during the city's year as European Capital of Culture.

A mayoral electoral pact between the city council's three main political parties was finally agreed yesterday.

The crunch talks between Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, and Labour, had been ongoing since last Monday.

They were trying to shore up the pact, which has been in place since 1980, that sees the Lord Mayor's chain of office rotate between the parties for the five-year council term.

Following a breakthrough on Wednesday afternoon, the deal came close to collapse late that night.

But talks went on into the morning and a deal was finally struck.

It is understood Labour representatives were happy with the mayoral pact but wanted to renegotiate certain key committee positions on bodies like the VEC, the Regional Authority and the Port of Cork.

It is now almost certain that when Lord Mayor, Cllr Colm Burke (FG), steps down from his year in office next Monday night, Mr Martin, an ESB worker from Turner's Cross, will be elected.

It is also understood that the parties have agreed on the rotation of the chain of office over the next five years two years each for FF and FG councillors, and one year for Labour.
