JAMES PLUNKETT, acclaimed author of the epic Strumpet City and lifelong labour activist, was yesterday remembered as a gentleman of incredible talent, following his death.

Strumpet City author James Plunkett dies aged 83

Mr Plunkett, who wrote three novels, a number of short story collections, radio and stage plays and poetry during a writing career spanning nearly 50 years, died in a Dublin nursing home yesterday morning, aged 83.

He will be remembered for his caring but gritty portrayals of Dublin life and the fight for workers' rights in the early part of the 20th century.
