30% of gardaí can carry firearms

THREE out of 10 gardaí are entitled to carry firearms, according to new figures.

Some 3,631 gardaí currently hold firearms cards, authorising them to be armed on duty.

This is out of a total organisational strength of 12,292, representing 30% of the entire force.
