ONLY 75 people have received penalty points for careless driving almost a year since it became a five-point offence in a bid to stop motorists using mobile phones.

Fine Gael has said the figures highlight the need for legislation to make it easier to penalise drivers who use their phone at the wheel.

Yet Department of Transport figures reveal only 75 motorists got penalty points for careless driving up to the end of last month.
