State pays nearly €1m in cases against gardaí

AT least 26 cases taken by civilians against gardaí have been settled out of court so far this year.

The State has paid out a total of almost €1m to the complainants, excluding legal costs.

The figures come as Justice Minister Michael McDowell plans to give considerable extra powers to gardaí.
