TWO gardaí, whose conduct led to the collapse of a murder conviction, have been disciplined and given a substantial fine, Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy said yesterday.

The two gardaí were drinking with some of the jurors involved in the case until the early hours, while one of the gardaí allegedly sexually assaulted a female juror in her room afterwards.

On Monday, the Court of Criminal Appeal ruled that the conduct of the gardaí rendered the conviction of Martin McDonagh unsatisfactory.
