THE EU yesterday agreed for the first time to designate Irish as one of its official and working languages.

The decision stemmed from a Government application to the EU last year requesting that Irish be recognised as one of the union’s official languages.

Until now, the status of Irish in the EU has been as a treaty language, putting it on a par with minor languages in other European countries.
