Bruton to represent EU in Washington

FORMER Taoiseach John Bruton has been chosen to represent the EU in Washington, where it is hoped he will help rebuild the often difficult relationship between the two main western power blocs.

The position has normally been filled by a career diplomat but the Commission opted for a politician this time to manage their most important overseas office.

External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten, who also belongs to the same Christian Democrats grouping as Mr Bruton in Europe, favoured giving the job to an Irishman to capitalise on the good relations between the US and Ireland.
