PROVISIONAL drivers will be fined on the spot from next month if they are not accompanied by a qualified driver.

The country's 300,000 learner drivers are the next target of the Government's road safety crackdown, Transport Minister Séamus Brennan said last night.

Mr Brennan said as well as on-the-spot fines, all those on a provisional licence will face stiffer driving tests and will be hit with one penalty point for driving unaccompanied later in the year.
