THE church in which Roy Keane was baptised is hoping to make several thousand euro tomorrow from the auction of one of the last Manchester Utd jerseys he wore.

Fr Robert Young, parish priest at Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, said he was very grateful to the soccer star for the unsolicited donation towards the church restoration fund.

“I’d like to acknowledge Roy’s generosity. I’ve met him and found him a gentleman.

“He does a lot for charities behind the scenes and I’d like to wish him and his family the best for the future,” Fr Young said.

The signed jersey, which comes with a certificate of authentication, is to be auctioned at 3.30pm at the Moran Silver Springs convention centre by commentator Ger Canning.

Between 2pm and 6pm the centre will host an arts and crafts fair, again in aid of the church, which will highlight the talents of Mayfield people.

Fr Young said clergy are trying to raise €1.2 million for restoration.

“We need to storm glaze the stained glass windows, put in a wheelchair ramp and disabled toilet as well as carrying out rewiring, painting, putting down new flooring and creating a bigger space around the baptismal font,” Fr Young said.
