GARDAÍ in Galway were last night investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body in suspicious circumstances yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí investigate young man’s death

The investigation was launched after the discovery of the body of John Rooney, aged 21, who was found dead by his mother at their home in Eyre Court in east Galway.

The grim discovery was made at lunchtime yesterday after which gardaí were immediately alerted.

Detectives in a Eyrecourt village were last night awaiting the results of a postmortem examination before deciding to launch a murder inquiry, although routine inquiries had already taking place, a garda spokesperson confirmed.

Although no formal announcement has yet been made, it is understood gardaí are treating the death as suspicious.

Yesterday afternoon assistant state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy was called to the scene and was last night continuing to carry out a postmortem on the remains of Mr Rooney.

Meanwhile, the scene in the east Galway village was sealed off as gardaí searched for clues and conducted house to house interviews.

Investigating gardaí also sealed off part of the street which is believed to be central to the investigation.

It is believed some sort of incident took place on the street before the discovery of Mr Rooney.

Gardaí believe this may have been related to the death of the young man.
