FUNDING of street lighting needs to be prioritised by local authorities to help fight crime, Fine Gael justice spokesman John Deasy said yesterday.

Stating it was now clear the Government had abandoned its promise to hire 2000 extra gardaí, Deputy Deasy said other methods of making the streets safer were required.

According to a British Home Office Report, good quality street lighting is more effective than Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in reducing crime rates, he said.
