Cowen promises ‘progressive’ Budget

THE elderly, the young, the poor and those on modest incomes are expected to be the major beneficiaries of Brian Cowen’s “progressive” Budget this afternoon.

With an estimated €2.5 billion at his disposal, the Minister for Finance has already signalled that childcare, an elderly care package, social welfare and investment will be his key spending priorities.

On the eve of his second Budget, Mr Cowen said last night he wanted to present a progressive budget that ensured that those on lower income and welfare were helped primarily.
