Minister seeks welfare reforms

COURAGEOUS new reforms are needed to tackle child and pensioner poverty and to help lone parents, Social Affairs Minister Séamus Brennan said yesterday.

He added there was now a window of opportunity to bring about major social change. This year, €1 in every €3 the state spends this year will be on welfare.

Mr Brennan insisted that cash handouts were not the answer.
