Referendum needed to cap land prices, says Taoiseach

TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern said yesterday a referendum was needed to pave the way for capping land prices as any move under current legislation would be challenged in the courts.

However, speaking during question time in the Dáil yesterday, Mr Ahern did not say when any such referendum might take place.

Mr Ahern said the Government was awaiting the recommendations of a National Economic and Social Council (NESC) report into the land issue. A further report into the land question from the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution is also expected shortly.
