RESEARCH using human embryos could be carried out in Ireland as there is no legislation in place to prevent this, the Government has admitted in a document to the European Union.

However, banning such research could also mean banning in-vitro fertilisation treatment and the morning after pill.

Tánaiste Mary Harney said she believes the Government will have to introduce a law to govern such research, though no legislation is currently being prepared.
