ENVIRONMENT Minister Dick Roche yesterday pledged the State would deliver more affordable homes of high quality and do so at "a faster pace" than before.

Just 800 housing units of 10,000 promised in the Sustaining Progress social partnership agreement of 2003 have so far been built.

But Mr Roche insisted that the establishment of the Affordable Homes Partnership, a new body which will address the problem in the greater Dublin area, would be a "significant step forward".
