GARDAÍ yesterday began seeking adjournments in district courts around the country following a Supreme Court ruling which casts doubt on the use of the Intoxilyzer in drink drive cases.

Up to 2,000 drivers facing drink-driving prosecutions are anxiously waiting to hear whether their cases will be thrown out.

The Intoxilyzer breath test has been used since December 1999 and accounts for samples taken in three-quarters of the 12,000 suspected drink-driving cases pursued each year.
