THE creation of 100 extra teaching posts for post-Leaving Cert courses has been given a guarded welcome by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland.

Details of the new positions, which will be put in place in the coming academic year, were announced by Education Minister Mary Hanafin at the TUI annual congress in Dublin yesterday.

Although the announcement of the new teaching positions was welcomed by TUI president Paddy Healy as part of the minister’s “positive approach” to educational reform, it was greeted with muted applause by over 500 delegates.
