REFUGEE groups last night welcomed new measures which will put an end to the deportation of Irish citizen children.

An estimated 11,000 Irish-born children, born to non-national parents in recent years, have been granted Irish citizenship on the basis of having been born here.

However, most of those families have been living in a legal limbo in fear of deportation after a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year rejected such citizenship alone as a proper legal basis for a family to seek permission to remain in Ireland.
