WINGS Over Delft, the story of a young girl in 17th century Holland who agrees to have her portrait painted and develops a relationship with the painter, won the 2004 Bisto Book of the Year Award yesterday.

Its writer, Dublin-born Aubrey Flegg, was presented yesterday with the children’s literature award by author Sheila O’Flanagan at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre in Dublin.

Flegg, whose third book it is, also won a Peter Pan Award in 2000 for Katie’s War. He described Wings as “a love story but also a story of growing up.”
