LESS than half of teachers helping children with reading difficulties have had appropriate training, major research has found.

The Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) shows that between 25% and 30% of children in poorer areas have serious reading difficulties, compared to 10% in all schools.

It has prompted Education Minister Mary Hanafin to give disadvantaged schools €500,000 for books before Christmas.
