FOUR of Ireland’s larger cities have been given a black mark for litter. Waterford is the only city to achieve litter-free status under international monitoring standards, while Cork showed considerable improvement in the war on litter over the past year.

Sligo was branded a "litter black spot" while Dublin, Galway and Limerick were found to have "serious" litter problems.

None of the cities is in the running for an anti-litter title being announced today. The winner will be chosen from Carlow, Cavan, Fermoy, Monaghan and Wexford.
